In June 2011, International HR Benchmarking Community met for the third time in two different workshops to discuss trends and current ‘hot topics’ regarding HR Effectiveness and HR Efficiency.

HR Effectiveness June 15/ 16th in London

The workshop on HR effectiveness took place at the offices of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in London. The day started off with a key note of the host, GSK, focusing on the HR transformation journey and the evaluation of their HR Business Partner model.
Volker Jacobs, Managing Partner at Baumgartner & Partner, gave an overview of the key results of the International HR Benchmarking with the main focus on the analyses of the Human Potential Index (HPI) which was used by Baumgartner to capture the quality of the HR work within the participating companies.
The workshop was further enriched by a participant presentation from ING about their aim ‘To be a Top Employer’ and various breakout sessions discussing ways of measuring the quality of HR work and trends which have recently been implemented in the companies.
The discussions around the methodology showed that the challenges to measuring HR effectiveness are remaining. With regards to the benchmarking, all participants agreed that the HPI marks a sophisticated step towards a more robust measurement and analysis of HR effectiveness. The results of the HR Effectiveness and especially the link to HR efficiency KPIs have been approved as very useful in the group of participants.
The evening event at Fuller’s Brewery followed by the joint dinner gave room for informal discussions and to form long-lasting contacts.

HR Efficiency June 21/ 22th in Brussels

The workshop on HR Efficiency hosted by Dexia in Brussels started off with a presentation of the host about their journey towards HR Shared Service Centers. This was followed by the presentation of key results where the link between HR Efficiency analysis and results of the HR Shared Service Center Deep Dive sparked off interesting discussions.
Additionally, DuPont’s presentation on their HR model in EMEA gave interesting insights into a regional HR set up.
The different breakout sessions were used to analyze questions such as To which extent does the complexity of the environment influence the efficiency of HR?
Is HR outsourcing really as efficient and beneficial to the HR organization as generally thought and what are key success factors.

  • Is consultancy a service that should and can be offered by the HR Service Center on a regional level

The discussions on these topics were supplemented with examples and experiences from the participants. This information was appreciated by the companies and enables the community members to take insights of other companies back to their own daily business.
The evening event at the Chocolaterie Duval followed by dinner fostered the strength of the network.
The feedback of all participants was very positive and constructive and we are grateful to our hosts at GSK in London and Dexia in Brussels as well as to all participants for making the workshops as exciting and inspiring as they were.

The benchmarking community is open for new members now. Data collection and reception of the benchmarking report can follow an individual timeline. The next community meetings are:

  • Workshop on HR Business Partner organization and HR Planning & Analytics: 8th/ 9th of November
  • Kick-Off Workshop International HR Benchmarking: 24th of November
